The setup I use is forward skip is 30 seconds, backward skip is 30
seconds, but when backward skip is used immediately after using
forward skip, it changes to 10 seconds. The way it works is you use
the right arrow quickly as many times as necessary until you see you
are past the ad break (30 s per keystroke, so typically 6-8 keystrokes
here in New Zealand), then the left arrow several times (10 s per
keystroke) until you see you are just back into the ad break, then you
stop skipping and let it roll forwards. Within 10 seconds it is
playing the programme again. This is extremely rapid and accurate.

If you have been using back skip after forward skip so it is skipping
only 10 s per keystroke, and you then find you want the bigger 30 s
skip backwards, use the Esc key (Back button on a remote) to exit from
the progress bar display on screen. Then use the left arrow to get 30
second skips.

I have not changed those settings since I first started using MythTV,
so I have no clue where to find them in the v30 settings. They may be
the defaults now, but I think back then I needed to enable a "smart"
option somewhere to get the 10 s / 30 s operation of the left arrow
key.

The PgUp and PgDn keys skip 10 minutes forwards and backwards, and
there is a newer option to move as many minutes as you like by keying
in a number (as many digits as you like) followed by a left or right
arrow. That moves that many minutes. So if you ad breaks are
typically 4 minutes long, 4 then right arrow takes you to near the end
of the ad break.
