Another important think about smartmontools is it can notify you on important things like when the drives have a change in any of the error/diag counters.

When running RAIDs -- this can prove critical to know a particular drive in the array is unhappy and to take action.

personally, I have another CPU power to run mdadm (software RAID) which has worked great over the almost 11yrs this particular server has been running.

I've completely changed out/upgraded my RAID array drives in it at least once not including the random drives that fail for whatever reason.

for those random drives, every time one start to feel ill, smartmontools let me know well in advance.
