Thanks for your input, Saul. I checked lsmod output more carefully last
night, and tda18212 was among those in the output--although I must admit
that I cannot say for certain that it did not show up there after I'd
done a manual modprobe of it (was sort of a whirlwind tinkering session).

I discovered another, unrelated problem in trying to follow Hika's
advice--having to do with a multilib conflict and my selected profile--but
that's Gentoo-specific, so I won't go into it here. That issue is in the
process of being corrected (hopefully) as I write this.

I actually previously booted another distro (Bodhi) and had this stick
inserted at the time: I did make note of the modules it loaded for this
device. I tried to compile all those into the kernel once I began my
Gentoo installation, though some could only be compiled as modules. Just
last night I began introducing some changes to loaded modules to see
whether that will help: at least 3 additional modules related to the stick
are now loading, but the DVB node still appears to be inactive. I should
mention that, although it was clear that Bodhi was loading a few modules
for this stick, I did not actually try using the stick from within Bodhi,
so I'm not certain that all needed modules were being loaded under that
OS.

I hope to be able to post a progress report as soon as my Gentoo issue
gets sorted.
