One is the HDMI output used for mythfrontend, and the other is a VGA input used for anything else (terminal window, web browser, etc.). So I tried disabling the VGA output using nvidia-settings, and that does fix the Myth playback issue. Unfortunate, because trying to do these other things on the HD display really doesn't work very well (the text is too blurry to read, whereas the lower res VGA display works well for this).

Is it too blurry or too small?
If too blurry, could it be that you are using a 720p TV at a 1080i resolution? If so, you can get a better quality display for terminal and web browsing if you configure the graphics driver to output a 720p resolution.
If too small, you can probably change default font size and other appearance related settings to get more legible output from your terminal emulator and web browser.
