Which you employ on the clients with the "http_proxy=" environment
variable?

So just to be clear, you don't even give the FE machines the
"http_proxy=" environment setting then?  Or do you mean you give them
that environment variable but whitelist them in the proxy ACLs so they
still use the proxy but are not required to authenticate?

FWIW, that is what I do here.  Of course I don't expect a MythFE to
authenticate, but I do want it to use the proxy still, for the caching
efficiencies at least.
