Thanks for the clarification. When I said sending to an "interlaced
display" I was implying that the driver was configured to be sending
an interlaced output. Since he has an SD I assumed he would be using
something like TVStandard NTSC-M, which as you pointed out probably
isn't a good assumption to make. Thanks for the clarification.

Sorry I thought it was clear. I was answering his question, " What
about interlacing? Is this process just as processor-intensive as
de-interlacing?" And the answer is no you don't need to worry about
the processing power required to send an interlaced signal with no
deinterlacing applied. I was not saying he didn't need to worry about
processing power when looking at VDPAU deinterlacing. He already
stated that he was aware of the fact there was a distinction between
deinterlacing capability of the various VDPAU cards. I was only
speaking directly to his question about whether VDPAU or CPU/GPU power
was required for purely interlaced signals with no deinterlacing
involved.
