I set up digital audio for the first time about 2 weeks - I even set a
night aside to do it (expecting the worst!).

In the end, I just connected a coax cable from pc to receiver, unmuted
the digital output in alsamixer, selected iec958 (or something
similar) as the passthrough device in Settings, turned on 'Enable ac3
passthrough' (or whatever the text is) and it worked. Same for DTS. No
issues - job done in about 3 minutes.

This is using the onboard sound (ASUS P5B DW mobo), unmodifed Ubuntu
Edgy (might even be Dapper actually!) and Logitech Z5500 speakers.

Probably not much help but I suspect most of the problems people have
with digital sound is overcomplicating/playing with their alsa config
files - I did a lot of reading around before I jumped in and just
tried the defaults to start.
