I would check the backend logfile (typically
/var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log if using atrmps) but can be specified
in /etc/sysconfig/mythbackend. If you don't see anything there, you
could turn on verbose logging of recording (see mythbackend -v help
for logging options). The backend log is the first place to check for
issues.

It could be access permissions to either the recording devices, or to
the storage location, or a tuning issue - make sure the backend
process's owner can read from the capture devices and can write to the
storage. The video card should not interfere with the recording
process, but could affect playback if the card is not installed
properly.
