We do this all the time as well. In the floor, master bath closet
adjacent to master bedroom, under the bay window sitting area, custom
furniture in the middle of the media room...

In the US,
http://www.partsexpress.com/webpage.cfm?&DID=7&WebPage_ID=29&wt.svl=1 is
a great source for the DIY'er (and us pros). I'm fairly certain the UK
has an equivalent outlet.

If you DO go the route of building your own subwoofer or just want to
improve a setup you already have, go the extra distance and read up on
room modes. _Placing_ the subwoofer within a room is an art and science
itself.

Be forewarned: once you gain knowledge and momentum, you'll have picked
up a new hobby/habit and have to justify even more expenditures to the wife!
