Personnaly, i'd suggest you go with the latest lirc 0.7-pre8 which has
a userland driver for the ATIUSB remote, which is much easier to setup
than the kernel module + userland tools ...

The provided lircd.conf needed some adjustements  on my side, but it
was just a question of appropriately using irrecord.
