Just to give you a third option I say neither. ;-)  In my case, the 
ati_remote.ko worked fine.  It even controls the mouse in X without any

You didn't mention which kernel you are using. Here are a couple of 
patches to make ati_remote a little more Myth friendly.

I don't have a separate patch for 2.6.9 because it is in my big patch 
for 2.6.9.

The problems with the kernel module are that the key map is not 
modifyable without recompiling the ati_remote module and you need to 
change other programs to match it.  Because I run everything as the myth 
user I created a custom key map for mplayer to match Myth (only had to 
change a couple of things).
