This reminds me of a nice anecdote. I worked at the University of
Utrecht and worked with an (outdated) Win98SE computer. Now both
libraries the University of Utrecht and the technical Delft had access
to full-text journals over the web. Although the accessible journals
were complementary(as a cost reduction), the PhD students could not
access each other.
There was a Unix server in Delft which we could access. Therefore I
installed a X client (Hummingbird I think). Now I connected to Delft
over the network, start Mozilla there and have it retrieve the much
wanted full-text articles. The program was run entirely on the other
machine, only the output was sent to my screen. And it wasn't in the
slightest way sluggish.

Well this all became obsolete when it became more common for publishers
to bundle the full-text versions with the printed journals.
