You're right, it is for the input port, not output.  My bad.

I had to do two things to fix my B&W problem: first, set up MythTV
with the video source on S-Video 0 (which involved lots of relatively
simple database updates because I didn't want to wait for programming
information to be re-downloaded); second, I had to do the test_ioctl
-p 6 instead of -p 0, the latter of which seems to be composite
input.

It's not clear to me why it should make a difference (my impression is
that S-Video<->Composite is a simple conversion done easily in
hardware by those little dongles you get with video cards with
TV-out), but it seems to. :P  Now, S-Video vs. component is a much
bigger deal...
