Lirc-serial is pretty cool if you have a serial port available. Build your
own from parts, or you may be able to buy a premade one:

The parts are about $10 online or $20 at Radio Shack. A homebrew receiver
is nice because it works with (almost) any remote control.
You'll definitely want a transmitter so that Myth can change channels on
the cable box to do automatic recording. Are you doing just live TV right
now?

It discards the rest of the buffer and changes immediately (with a ~2
second lag visible). If you change channels when you're ten minutes
behind live TV, you lose those ten minutes. Forever. :)
