I'm still not sure I understand what you mean by "have to use MythTV's 
interface"... yes, you need to run the MythTV user interface ('mythfrontend') 
in order to control & view Myth, but you can interact with the screen 
interface using either a keyboard or an infrared remote (using LIRC).
