Yes, SATA did away with the whole master/slave thing specifically due to the 
performance hit you take with multiple drives on the same bus. ATA/IDE can 
only talk to a single drive at a time which means another drive with pending 
operations must wait for it's turn to talk to the cpu/system etc.

SCSI on the otherhand supports communicating with multiple drives 
concurrently.
