I use a program called "mpgsplit" that can split a mpeg on file size or 
time, whichever you prefer.  It works quite well for me.  I didn't have 
good luck with avidemux2, but that could be because I don't know how to 
use it.

for example, I use mpgsplit as follows:

mpgsplit Filename.mpg [-795M]

This creates a file called "chunk.mpg" of 795 megs.
