In my experience I've had to recompile Apache to add IMAP support (i meant IMAP,
not qmail).  I just feel that I have more control with Apache when its compiled
manually vs. RPMs.

I had no idea you could "build your own" RPMs.  I need to research this. 

I wouldn't call myself a noobie, but I'm much closer to that end of the spectrum
than an RHCE.  Thanks for your patience and guidance.
