I've always felt that the problem is that everything is supposed to 
happen in one sequence; if one step fails there's no obvious escape 
route.  But it works for me, processing in stages.  And most of my 
recordings are 720x576

The file-size thing sounds as if it wants to re-encode.  Use 'menu' to 
select.

You may need to examine:

Frontend > Setup > Media Settings > Archive Files Settings
