That brings up an interesting note worth sharing.
A server here at home (Linux) has a RAID1 root filesystem running WD drives.
I bought all the drives in 2011 (3) so I'd have a spare when needed.
I recently started having IO issues with one of the drives so I replaced it with the spare.
That spare started reporting errors doing the SMART short self-test at 55hrs.
I reported this to WD and asked if they would consider a warranty replacement considering the power on hours.
They did! (but they could only supply a replacement 1TB drive. )
So I got the drive -- put it in and returned the drive in question.
On receipt, they reported it was a counterfeit drive!! (Which I bought from Newegg.)
So I had to get Newegg involved -- provided all the needed receipts and what (keep those receipts people!)
Ultimately it was taken care of. (as Newegg should have.)
But the real story is that WD replaced a drive under warranty that was 4.5yrs old (this happened last fall) based on low SMART reported power-on-hours.
That's pretty much a win in my book.
Cheers,
-Ben
