I had a similar problem with my receiver and my television.  If I booted
with the television and receiver off, X would load but would get stuck on
the logon screen.  I have my system set to automatically log on and start
mythfrontend.  If I booted with everything on, I could switch back and
forth, but this probably varies for different video equipment.

What I had to do was to grab the EDID information using help from the
webpage below from the wiki.  There is probably an analogous method for
other video card manufacturers.
