Thanks Hika and Mike. It turned out I wasn't even able to drop
mythconverg. I had to go in and manually delete half a dozen .frm, MYI,
MYD files from the mysql directory before it would let me do that. In the
end, I did a complete restore of the two day old backup and move the
stranded recordings to the Videos directory. It sounds like perhaps I
could have salvaged the db at the risk of inconsistencies, but not a big
deal.
