As far as myth is concerned it won't make much difference.
hw are hardware device, no processing is done and those devices only
support what the hardware supports. Alsa won't resample, downmix, upmix or
apply any processing.

Myth queries the audio device to find out what it supports and performs the
require conversions as needed.

So use whatever works for you.
