IIRC, only some of the Lirc modules wouldn't compile.  If you tell it to 
build all of the modules, it will fail.  But if you select just the one 
you need, for example mceusb, it will build and install fine.

That's what I did, anyway.  Using stock Squeeze (and debian-multimedia.org).
