Thank you for responding.

I had some old and duplicate lirc related files in my ~/.lirc directory.
So I cleared it out, and then created a symbolic link to the .lircrc
file in my home directory:

ln -s ~/.lircrc .lirc/lircrc

This seems to have solved the problem.

Everything is now working as expected.
