Hauppauge.  I used to live a stone's throw from there and I still have
to think twice about how to spell it.

That doesn't really satisfy the original request:

  Consumer type 'one box' product, can't have lots of bits and
  extraneous wires hanging off it.

I think the pertinent questions to Another Silly Name are:

  1. How many units are you looking to build?
  2. If this is for charity, will assembly labor be available for no cost?

If you have sufficient donated labor, such that you can afford to
spend 2-3 man-hours per unit, you can do a lot of things to mount
these USB tuners internally into a case in such a way that all that's
visible from the back of the unit is a single coax connector and the
ir receiver is still visible from a window in the front.
