I hadn't tested without xorg.conf, so I moved the file away and
restarted X just now. It definitely does not work without xorg.conf!
Resolution is lower when I start X without that config file, and tv-out
doesn't work. When I run nvidia-settings it complains that I am not
using the nvidia driver and I should run nvidia-xconfig:
root at pendaran:~# nvidia-xconfig
WARNING: Unable to locate/open X configuration file.
New X configuration file written to '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'
Ah well.
The working xorg.conf is attached, in case anyone is curious.
Current issue is that the screen on TV-out is the wrong size, so I can't
see the edges of it -- importantly, I can't see the Ubuntu toolbar on
the bottom of the screen, so I can't start programs (like Myth!) from
the start menu. Googling tells me that this is a problem lots of people
have with nvidia cards + tv-out and no solution has been found. I can
work around it, but if anyone here has solved it, I would love to know
how.
Jessica
