when you say OTA, do you mean strictly channels you get from an
antenna or can you also get those channels from the cable? or said a
different way, can you get at least the major network channels from
the cable using the hdhomerun?

Yes, OTA are channels that you CAN get from an antenna. Comcast has to carry these channels unencrypted. Currently, I get them from Comcast, but I'll be switching soon.
