Oh Brian, methinks you do not have kids! Neither do I but the three
pre-teens next door and the 2 teenage girls across the street are quite
enough for me to be able to write papers for the journal of suburban
anthropology.
1 The kids will not be around when you need them.
2. If the kids are around, they will be:
a) busy
b) deaf
c) disgruntled
d) angry
e) disrespectful
f) all of the above
3. You will need to bribe the young ones with something which you
otherwise would not want to give them, probably something which ruins
their teeth, or their hearing AND yours at the same time. (Ever make the
mistake of giving a 4year old boy a whistle. Ever had the pleasure of
giving a whistle to the 4year old son of someone you dislike?)
4. You will need to threaten the older ones to get them to do what you
want. The threat will probably be of a sort which will ensure that the
child will be, simultaneously, all of items 2 b through e above, and
resentful. And will also simultaneously make your significant other
angry with you, for being a) too strict, or b) too indulgent.
5. All of the children falling in group 4 and half the children in group
3 will not do what you want done, out of a perverse pleasure in pissing
you off.
6. The other half of the children in group 3 will just do the wrong
thing, because they are actually too young to be allowed to play with
your stereo system, or myth music setup.
7. You will end up wondering how Dexter Morgan gets away with it...
8. You cannot get blood DNA out of the pores of a hardwood floor.
9. And you should also remember Red Buttons comment: Never raise your
hands to your kids. It leaves your groin unprotected.
10. What is the hourly rate for the opportunity cost of aggravation
avoidance? How many hours does it take to cover the cost of a remote
control system?
