Just upgrade your installation of XMLTV to the current version
(v0.5.51) which was released a couple of weeks ago. Incidentally, NULL
character handling was added in v0.5.50 of XMLTV.
The current release version of tv_grab_uk_rt also has, amongst many
other improvements, much improved Unicode handling that should give
you higher quality listings data.
