Also, newer versions of v4l have changed this command:

/usr/local/bin/v4l2-ctl -video /dev/Pansat-VIDEO volume mute off

works for me, where /dev/Pansat-VIDEO is the video device of the
saa7134 card.  I'm using a Compro VideoMate TV Gold Plus
(http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Compro_VideoMate_TV_Gold_Plus)
and capturing sound via the pci bus (saa7134-alsa) works fine here.
