This normally means you have a problem with your video source configuration.

I suppose this might also be related to a bad video source config.
What does the backend log show when you try and change channel?

Wherever you've told mythfrontend to put it :) Start mythfrontend with
the --logfile <file> option and tell it where to store the log.
