Aaah ok.. this was not clear in the howto I've read. Or I just didn't get it. ;)

Hmm, I'm using gentoo and the installation of mythtv depends on X. There's
no possibility to install the backend only. That's why I thought this way.

Do you know whether the project developers are planning to split the frontend
and the backend into several programs (server/client principle)?

This would be great, and the installation would be much cleaner.
