I upgraded from 4.1 to 4.2 without changing the firmware.  You can try to 
enable debugging in firmware.agent (DEBUG line) and/or hotplug.functions), 
redo the hotplug proces (/etc/init.d/hotplug restart) and check the logfile 
(/var/log/syslog).
