You have to set them to what they actually are in the hardware, as
listed in /dev/video* on the slave.

The myth database will know that they are on a different machine
and will place them in the table with a different back-end name,
and will not confuse them with the on in the master backend.

What do you mean "they don't get added to the database"?
Are you properly going thru mythsetup on the slave (connecting to
the master backend's mysql?

Can you use knoda or one of the other mysql utilitities (or even
the command line version) to look at
the database to see if they are really there?
