[mythtv-users] installation problems on ubuntu 6.10

Hi.

After reading a bunch of threads I decided on the following specs for
my MythTV box:

Hauppauge PVR150 (to connect to my cable tv unit via scart to component cable)
Dvico DVB-T Dual Digital (connected to standard aerial point via coax)
Gigabyte mobo with 1gig RAM
on board sis graphics
Celeron 1.8Ghtz CPU.

Initially tried to set this up using dapper, but ran into
complications getting the two capture cards working together.

Started again with a clean slate with Edgy, which seems to have
natively recognized the Dvico card, but still required me to install
the ivtv drivers for the PVR150. This seemed to be a simple task,
and the dmesg shows all the cool messages it is supposed to for both
cards.

The problem happens when I try to test the output with mplayer. When I run

dvbstream -o -ps -qam 64 -cr 3_4 519 720 | mplayer -

mplayer seems to open, flashes to a black screen, then I get dumped
back to the terminal session where it prints out reams of :;-_
characters.

tzap reveals that I have locked the channel okay, so I am confused by
this behaviour of mplayer.

I decided that this a problem with mplayer, and carried on with
mythtv-setup. It found the pvr150 okay, but when I tried to manually
direct it to look at /dev/dvb/adapter0 it tole me that it couldn't
probe the device and refuses to acknowledge it.

I would *really* appreciate any and all advice at this point. I would
really love to get this working. It seems like it shouldn't be too
hard, but I am not all that experienced with guis or hardware drivers
under unix.

TIA

nuffi
