BTW, this error doesn't appear to be limited to Linux -- it also pops up on
FreeBSD and NetBSD.

OK, just for the archives, I found a fix to the "ICE default..." error.
It's counterintuitive, but I provide it in the hope that it'll get somebody
else out of this jam.
I found a tip at
http://groups.google.com/group/opera.linux/browse_thread/thread/36ca22cd7fc28adc/cc619f7bde47eb8c?lnk=st&q=ICE+default+IO+error+handler+doing+an+exit()&rnum=35&hl=es#cc619f7bde47eb8c
that basically suggested deleting the ~/.ICEauthority file. I did it, and
mytharchive / mythburn.py worked like a charm. I did receive the following
error in my mythburn.log file:
Session management error: Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the
authentication protocols
specified are supported and host-based authentication failed
but it didn't appear to affect the outcome of the operation.
Note that the .ICEauthority file will get re-created periodically, so you
will need to check for it before archiving files using mythfrontend.
