You can either push the gdm since you know it works for others or you
can start exploring the rungetty way.
Regarding gdm, I find "man xsession" interesting. It leads me
to /etc/gdm/Xsession where you could put some debugging messages to see
why it doesn't execute your USERSESSION.
Also man Xsession.options gives useful hints. My .xsession file is
executable...
