Hey,

I switched from ati to nvidia card just because nvidia has much better
support for linux. I changed to knoppmyth release and I did not succeed to
use 1280*720 resolution (that is native for my projector) and I had to scale
the image to 1280*768. With fedora I did not have this problem or any
problems with tv-out since I could use ati's own drivers. TV-out is only
working in ati's own drivers.

Nvidia drivers can be compiled to any distribution. Also gentoo had some odd
problem with ati-drivers.

I would suggest nvidia card because of the better linux support.
