That's odd.
I think you may have disabled your PVR350's decoder for sound *and* video.
Now it's using the framebuffer to play video and the soundcard to play
audio.
Which is going to increase the cpu usage a lot, and probably decrease
video quality (jerking/tearing?)
Do you have the sound output of your PVR350 piped back into the line-in
on your soundcard?
And then under alsamixer *unmute* the line-in (and set it as capture)
That gives really quite good analog sound.
s/pdif is more tricky (it doesn't work) because you need to sample the
line-in at 48kHz and feed it back out the pcm to the s/pdif there is a
workaround, see here: http://www.mythtv.info/moin.cgi/DigitalSoundHowTo
