Hmmm... Maybe I am reading this wrong. I have never had a problem with selecting dead channels because I went thru the entire datadirect listing and removed all channels I do not receive/want.  The only time I have ever needed the up/down commands is when using the dish remote to look thru the ppv listings.

For ppv I have to use the dish remote to purchase the movie and then manually schedule a recording. Its a bit of a pain but since I dont buy alot of ppv its not a big issue.
