So, when channel doesn't report a RECV line, it means it got NO data, or just
no data that fit the protocol it expected?  

My experience with a DCT2244 (or something like that) and a GI cable box is that
they both will send you something over the serial connection, but it's almost as
if it's echoing the characters.   Generally if I use minicom or cat/echo to send
say, 'j', I will get 4 bytes back, one of which is always 'j'.

It's almost as though the system is in some other diag mode, as discussed on the
TiVo forums.  I haven't tried calling my cable company yet, but I'm sure it will
be painful so I've been putting it off.
