You don't need to write your own script to monitor your drive(s) health.
smartmontools includes smartd (SMART Disk Monitoring Daemon) as well as
smartctl. When you installed smartmontools, it should have done what's
needed to enable the smartd service. The tricky bit is making sure you
get the notifications the way you want them. smartd should automatically
send email to the administrator of the machine where it's running, which
is the user you created when installing your distro. It takes a little
more research and effort to forward that email where you'll notice it.
