If your storage location is accessible on the master BE, you can still
access the recordings if the slave BE is off, if you enable the right
option. 

Take a look at 'Master Backend Override' at:
https://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Setup_General

Using an NFS mount for the recordings is a good way to make that work.
