FWIW, I'm using this DVI-I Dual-Link 24+5 to HDMI adapter: 
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00R483O4A , and it's passing the 
audio through HDMI.  I'm not recommending you change to that particular 
adapter--there are plenty of people in the reviews who say that it does 
not pass audio and plenty of others that say it failed after only a 
couple of days/plugs/...  Instead I'm just letting you know that it's 
possible for it to work, regardless of what people (or sales pages or 
reviews or ...) say.  To get the audio working I just had to go into the 
frontend settings and rescan and change the audio output device (to use 
the HDMI on my NVidia card).
