Ultimately I ended up using a max recordings setting of 2 and leaving
the default with 2 entries per physical tuner. As far as my original
question as to how they're getting numbered as 1, 3, 5 even with a max
recordings setting of 1, here's what appears to be happening: By the
time you get to the screen to set max recordings to 1, it's apparently
already created the 2 entries, bumping up the MySQL auto-increment id.
Changing it to 1 deletes the extra entry, but the resulting next
available auto-increment id is still 3.

One thing I've been meaning to test regarding these multiple entries
per physical card...maybe someone knows this: If I have, for example,
card id 1 and 2 for the same physical tuner, and the system is
recording on card id 1, LiveTV would in fact let me switch to card 2.
If I do that, can it inadvertently end up changing the channel (to a
completely different multiplex for example) thus screwing up the
recording?
