I know I'm coming in late, but I don't use a window manager or a display 
manager. I added a getty with autologin to tty7. They .profile does a 
startx and .xinitrc starts the frontend. There's some logic in .profile 
and .xinitrc to make sure only one is running and that the login is on 
tty7. This method has worked for me for years. I will say that I don't 
use any external programs with myth, so there's no problem with 
different windows needing focus.
