ok I jumped in and upgraded to 340.98 as another frontend was running this
version without problems, you still cant select the higher resolution from
the dropdown but I could enter it manually.
without going to the graphics ppa
https://launchpad.net/~graphics-drivers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/ the highest
version available was 367.57 which appears to replace the 352.x version
