Are you using pulse audio? Because as far as I know alsa is not aware.
Except for hardware switches in front connectors used to turn of back
connectors when anything is plugged in.
You should anyhow check alsamixer. If the line is not muted there,
it's not done by alsa. If it is muted there you can simply unmute it
through amixer (the commandline version for alsamixer).
