It looks like I'm not quite at the end of my troubles.
I came back to the box only to find "X Could not connect to master
backend". Damn. The recording was still in progress, though, almost over,
and all looked like it had worked so far.
I went into Program Guide from the main menu as per your instructions
(still with "could not connect to master backend") and it took several
minutes of "loading", during which ESC was unresponsive. I started writing
this reply during that time. A program guide grid has since appeared. I was
able to arrow-down to BBC One HD. I pressed m and nothing happened. I' ve
still got "X Could not connect to master backend" that comes and goes. It's
unclear to me how the backend (a process on the same machine) could not be
responding but still doing the recordings.

The recording of Planes must have finished by now so I may just reboot the
machine and see if it's any healthier. Anyway, as I was writing these
further commentsthe menu did eventually pop up, and its options are

record this
recording options >
programme details
jump to time >
reverse channel order
channel search

None of them seems to have very much to do with "watch this channel" so I'm
not too sure where to go from here. Let me see if I can exit gracefully. It
doesn't look like it' s responding to ESC but maybe it' s just that it
takes a couple of minutes to service keypresses... YES, that was that.
Managed to exit the frontend without crashes. Now stopping the backend with
 sudo systemctl stop mythtv-backend.service
which is taking a few minutes too.
OK, done.
Now looking at the end of /var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log and it says...

....where again I can't make heads or tails of it but I sense a general
unhappiness ("timed out") as well as a repeated plea to "Rescan your
transports", whatever that means and however that's done.

Does this give meaningful hints to people smarter than me?

In the meantime I'll send off this email and reboot the box---always the
blunt weapon of choice against voodoo.
